Background
Institute for Social Transformation (IST) with funding support from the American Embassy Ambassador’s Self-help Program has engaged vulnerable women and youth from the six targeted sub counties in poultry rearing for business and health benefits. One hundred fifty (150) homes of the most impoverished women were given 8 female kroiler chicks and technical assistance and training in poultry rearing, basic business skills. By the end of the project, the beneficiaries will be empowered to own and sustain the businesses producing and selling eggs and chicken, to improve their economic livelihood and nutritional consumption.

To equip impoverished women/families with poultry rearing, management, savings and record keeping skills.

The project is running for 1 year (January –December 2017)

Six Sub-Counties of Busia district (Bulumbi, Masafu, Masinya, Buteba, Busia Municipal and Dabani)
Overall Project Objective
To improve the economic livelihood and nutritional consumption of beneficiaries.
Project Interventions
- Mobilisation, identification and selection of beneficiaries
- Identification of technical advisory service providers
- Training of 150 women on kroiler rearing and management
- Purchasing the chicks, feeders, feeds, Fowl box and medicines
- Market and marketing accessibility
- Target n=beneficiaries construct a hen house
- Follow up support and monitoring/reporting
Project Results
- Increase on the individual and family income
- Improvement in the quality of the diet and nutrition
- Enhanced livelihood through improved methods of farming, disease control, marketing, and housing and support services such as veterinary outposts.
- Improvement in women’s status
- Generation of social capital and enter a positive spiral of saving events that will move them out of poverty
- Improved village poultry production, resulting in an increased protein intake among families.
